History and Origin of Teej

The festival of Teej has been observed for many years, and according to Hindu mythology, it is the day when Goddess Parvati entered Lord Shiva's abode as his consort. Thus, the festival symbolizes a Hindu woman's respect, devotion, and love for her husband.

Types of Teej

Teej is one of the most important Hindu festivals in India in July. There are types of Teej celebrated in India – The Hariyali Teej, Hartalika Teej, and Kajari Teej. The Hariyali Teej, also known as 'Choti Teej,' is celebrated in the Hindu month of Shravan. This is followed by the Kajari Teej or the 'Badi Teej.' It is observed after fifteen days of Hariyali Teej. The last type of Teej, Hartalika Teej, falls in the Bhadrapad month, almost one month after Hariyali Teej. Although the customs, traditions, and celebrations may differ from state to state, the crux of the festival remains the same, i.e., women seeking Goddess Parvati's blessings for a blissful marital life.

Significance of Hariyali Teej 2024

Due to the marriage of the goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, Hariyali Teej has great religious significance. To please Lord Shiva, the goddess Parvati underwent 108 births to be accepted by Lord Shiva as his wife. Because it was Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the Shravan month, this date is revered as being extremely fortunate. Since God and the goddess were wed on this day, married ladies who perform Vrat with all Pooja Samagri on Hariyali Teej are blessed in particular ways. If you adore Lord Shiva and Parvati by doing all of their rituals, your marriage will be peaceful and joyful. The longevity of your husband will be to your benefit.

Here are some guidelines to follow during fasting for the Hariyali Teej -

  • Married women observe the fast, hoping their husbands will live long lives. Single girls practice this fast to entice the chosen man. Experts say that if a married woman observes the fast once, she must continue to do so yearly.
  • Women only eat after the muhurat concludes the following morning and after presenting vermilion to Goddess Parvati during their 24-hour fast.
  • At the muhurat time of the Pooja, women must do Aarti for Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, pray to both gods, and wish their husbands long life.
  • Homemade sweets and other delicacies are offered to the gods during this Pooja. Halwa, poori, gujiya, kheer, coconut ladoo, and fresh fruits are among the items on the menu. In some regions, prepackaged sweets such as ghewar and gulab jamun are also included.
  • After completing the evening Pooja, the fasting ladies touch their husbands' feet and ask for blessings.
  • Lord Shiva is offered cow milk, Bel Batra, Dhature Ke Phool, and leaves as part of the Pooja ceremony during the Pooja muhurat. It's said to be one of Lord Shiva's favorites.
