What is a rudraksha mala
A rudraksha mala is a necklace made from stringing anywhere from 28- 109 Rudrakshas. The string will traditionally be black or red in colour, but these days, gold nylon threads are also commonly used to make a rudraksha mala.
A rudraksha mala rudraksha will usually be used by anyone who wants to do prayers. Much like the rosaries used by the Christians, rudraksha mala is for Hindus and Buddhists. The Sikhs too use rudraksha mala to do their prayers. Since most prayers and jap in the Hindu and Buddhist scriptures need to be repeated more than 100 times, you will usually find malas with beads in multiples of 20, 50 or 100.
The rudraksha mala will usually have a principal bead followed by 27,55 or 108 beads strung alongside it. This helps the person keep count of their mantras or jap. But literally anyone can use the rudraksha mala to get into the practise of chanting prayers.

What is a 5 Mukhi rudraksha mala
There are almost 30 different types of rudraksha fruits in India. The most common type of rudraksha is the 5 Mukhi rudraksha. Rudraksha stones will have anywhere from 1-21 faces or ‘mukhis’. The most commonly used rudraksha for rudraksha malas are 5 Mukhi rudraksha mala. Because of their wide availability, they are easy to make into malas. 5 Mukhi rudraksha malas will be made with combination of any number of 5 Mukhi rudrakshas.
The 5 Mukhi rudraksha is also commonly used in making jewellery. For example bracelets and single rudraksha necklaces are very common. The jewellery are usually made with brass and copper.
Different faceted rudrakshas are also used differently. Like we discussed earlier, the 5 mukhi rudrakshas are used to make malas because they are most commonly found and are considered to be the most evenly balanced rudraksha by energy. However, the 1 mukhi rudrakshas are usually used by more experienced people. The 1 mukhi rudraksha is considered to be very volatile in energy distribution.
