What You Need for a Ganpati Setup at Home
Ganesh Chaturthi 2026 falls on Monday, 14 September. A home Ganpati setup is built in layers, and it helps to work from the idol outwards.
Start with what the idol sits on, which is a chowki, singhasan or aasan. Add the backdrop behind it, then the drape and garland on the idol itself, then the lighting and floor pieces around it, and finally the toran at the door. Most households need one item from each layer rather than many items from one.
The Layers
- Base: pooja chowki, singhasan, or a velvet or brocade aasan for the idol to rest on.
-
Backdrop: A floral backdrop, phool bangla, fabric hanging, or pompom and tassel curtain behind the idol.
-
On the idol: patka or dupatta, and a garland.
-
Around the idol: urli with floating flowers and diyas, oil lamps, tealights, decorated pooja thali and thali cover.
-
At the door: toran or door hanging, and rangoli at the entrance.
What Size Backdrop, Aasan and Patka to Buy
Decoration is easiest to get right when the pieces are scaled to the idol. Use the idol height as your starting point.

Small floral backdrop or a single fabric hanging

Full backdrop hanging, around 3.5 ft by 3 ft
|
45x45 cm or 60x60 cm
|
80 cm
|
Floor mandap or large console
|
Two practical points. Keep the backdrop wider than the idol on both sides, so the idol reads as the centre of the setup rather than being crowded by it. And leave enough clear space in front of the idol for the thali, the diya and the offerings, since that is where the puja actually happens.
Urli Sizes
Urlis are usually placed on the floor beside the setup or on the table in front. A smaller urli of around 6 to 9 inches suits a console or a shelf. A 12 to 15 inch urli works on the floor beside a mandap. Sets of graduated sizes are used to build a layered look on either side of the idol.
Which Decorations Are Allowed and Which Are Not
This is worth knowing before you buy, because the rules cover decorations and not just the idol.
The Central Pollution Control Board's Revised Guidelines for Idol Immersion, issued on 12 May 2020, state that single use plastic and thermocol are not permitted in idols or in decorations, and that toxic and non biodegradable chemical dyes should not be used. India's national single use plastic ban has restricted expanded polystyrene, which is what thermocol is, since July 2022. These central guidelines are put into effect by individual states and municipal bodies, so what applies to you depends on where you live.
This matters in practice because ready made thermocol makhars are still widely sold and widely recommended online. They are quick to install and inexpensive, but they are the one category the guidelines name directly.
Suitable Materials
Flowers, both fresh and artificial fabric flowers that are reused rather than discarded, cloth and velvet drapes, jute, bamboo, paper, wood, brass and copper, dried natural material, and clay or earthen diyas are all suitable. A fabric backdrop and a brass or wooden chowki can be stored and reused for years, which is both the cheaper and the cleaner option over time.
After the Festival
Flowers, garlands and offerings are known as nirmalya. These should be separated out before the idol is immersed, rather than going into the water with it. Compost them, or hand them to a nirmalya collection point if your municipality or society runs one during the festival. Fabric backdrops, drapes, torans, urlis, chowkis and lights are not immersed at all. Clean them, dry them and store them for next year.
This summary is provided for general guidance and reflects the position as of August 2026. Rules are set locally and change from year to year, so please check the current directions issued by your state pollution control board or municipal corporation.
How to Set Up Your Ganpati Decoration
1. A week ahead, decide where the idol will sit. The north east corner of the home is the usual recommendation, with the idol facing east or north. Measure the space so you know what size backdrop will fit.
2. Two or three days ahead, put up the backdrop and fix the chowki or singhasan in place. Doing this early means you are not pinning fabric at midnight.
3. The evening before, on 13 September, buy fresh flowers and garlands. Arrange the urlis, diyas and lights, and check that every bulb and lamp works.
4. On the morning of 14 September, hang the toran at the main door before the idol is brought in, and lay the rangoli at the entrance.
5. Place the aasan on the chowki, then install the idol during the sthapana muhurat. Drape the patka and offer the garland once the idol is seated.
6. Light the diyas last, and keep the flame away from fabric drapes, artificial flowers and hanging decorations.
A Note on Lighting
Oil lamps and tealights sit close to fabric in most home setups. Keep diyas on a metal or marble base rather than directly on cloth, keep them at the front of the setup rather than under a hanging drape, and never leave them burning in an empty room. LED tealights are a sensible substitute in a compact setup where an open flame would sit too close to the backdrop.
Storing and Reusing Decorations
Most Ganpati decoration is bought once and used for years, provided it is put away properly.
Fabric backdrops, drapes and patkas should be shaken out, aired and folded rather than stuffed into a bag while damp. Artificial flower backdrops and garlands keep their shape best when stored flat or loosely rolled, not compressed under heavier items. Brass chowkis, urlis and diyas should be washed of oil residue and dried completely before storage, since trapped moisture is what causes patchy dark spots on brass.
Label one box as the Ganpati box and keep everything together. The most common reason households rebuy the same items every year is not damage, it is not being able to find last year's set.

Q1. What do I need to decorate for Ganpati at home?
A home setup is built in layers. You need something for the idol to sit on, such as a chowki, singhasan or aasan. Then a backdrop behind the idol, a patka and garland on the idol itself, and lighting and floor pieces such as urlis and diyas around it. A toran at the main door and rangoli at the entrance complete it. Most households need one item from each layer rather than several from one.
Q2. What size backdrop do I need for my Ganesh idol?
Scale the backdrop to the idol. For a 4 to 6 inch idol on a shelf, a small floral backdrop or a single fabric hanging is enough. For a 7 to 10 inch idol, a medium backdrop or a pompom curtain set works. For an idol of a foot or more on a floor mandap, a full backdrop hanging of around 3.5 feet by 3 feet suits the scale. Keep the backdrop wider than the idol on both sides so the idol stays the centre of the setup.
Q3. What size aasan or pooja mat should I buy?
For a 4 to 6 inch idol, a 20x25 cm or 30x30 cm aasan is enough. For a 7 to 10 inch idol, choose 30x30 cm or 40x40 cm. For an idol of a foot or more, 45x45 cm or 60x60 cm gives the idol a proper base and leaves room for offerings in front.
Q4. What length of patka or dupatta do I need?
Patkas are usually available in 30 cm, 55 cm and 80 cm. A 30 cm patka suits a small idol of 4 to 6 inches, 55 cm suits an idol of 7 to 10 inches, and 80 cm suits an idol of a foot or more. If you are unsure between two lengths, the longer one drapes better and can always be folded.
Q5. Is thermocol allowed for Ganpati decoration?
The Central Pollution Control Board's Revised Guidelines for Idol Immersion, issued on 12 May 2020, state that thermocol and single use plastic are not permitted in idols or decorations. India's national single use plastic ban has restricted expanded polystyrene, which is what thermocol is, since July 2022. Ready made thermocol makhars are still widely sold, but fabric, flowers, jute, bamboo, paper and wood are the suitable alternatives, and a fabric backdrop can be stored and reused for years.
What are eco friendly Ganpati decoration options?
Fresh flowers and marigold strings, fabric and velvet drapes, jute and bamboo, paper and wooden pieces, brass and copper urlis and lamps, and clay diyas are all suitable. Artificial fabric flower backdrops also count as a sound choice when they are stored and reused rather than thrown away after one festival, since the environmental cost of decoration is mostly in what gets discarded.
When should I put up the decoration?
Put up the backdrop and fix the chowki two or three days ahead, so you are not doing it the night before. Buy fresh flowers and garlands on the evening before, which is 13 September in 2026. Hang the toran at the main door on the morning of 14 September before the idol is brought in, and lay the rangoli at the entrance the same morning.
Where should the Ganpati setup be placed in the house?
The north east corner of the home is the usual recommendation, with the idol facing east or north. Keep the idol raised on a chowki or shelf rather than on the floor, and leave clear space in front for the thali, the diya and the offerings. Avoid setting up in a bedroom, a bathroom, or directly under a staircase.
What should I do with the decorations after visarjan?
Flowers, garlands and offerings, known as nirmalya, should be separated out before the idol is immersed rather than going into the water with it. Compost them, or hand them to a nirmalya collection point if your municipality or society runs one. Fabric backdrops, drapes, torans, urlis, chowkis and lights are not immersed at all. Clean them, dry them completely and store them for next year.
How do I store Ganpati decorations so they last?
Air and fold fabric backdrops, drapes and patkas rather than packing them away damp. Store artificial flower backdrops and garlands flat or loosely rolled so they keep their shape. Wash oil residue off brass chowkis, urlis and diyas and dry them completely, since trapped moisture is what causes patchy dark spots on brass. Keep everything together in one labelled box, because the usual reason households rebuy the same items is simply not finding last year's set.
